To everyone using the counter of “People thought Heath Ledger would suck as the Joker” to justify Affleck as the new Batman: No. What another actor did in another role which the internet hype was wrong about has nothing to do with this. What if Rob Schneider was cast as Batman? Would that counter still hold the same weight?
Speaking of Rob Schneider, did you know that Ben Affleck beat Schneider out for the Worst Actor of the Decade in the 2010 Razzies?
Affleck has multiple things working against him here. It is NOT a simple question of people just can’t imagine Affleck as Batman.
- Affleck is replacing a previous Batman that nearly everyone loved and doing so only a few years after. Huge hurdle.
- Affleck isn’t known for his great acting. I know, you have examples pointing out otherwise. Well, he hasn’t racked up the major awards for his acting. They are for Directing and Writing. As pointed out previously, he did win the award for worst actor of the last decade. Yes, I understand many were terrible films it still doesn’t change the fact that his acting was also bad in them.
- Affleck could be great as Batman, but it is very reasonable that he could be terrible at it. This isn’t some crazy left-field conspiracy theory. His acting track record as well as a terrible history of bad casting in comic book adaptations are why people feel this way. Don’t let the last 3 Batman movies allow you to forget about the Clooney and Kilmer Batman movies. The Superman franchise on film has a similar track record. Or if you get bored, watch Daredevil. Affleck was Daredevil in that film. The thing is, with great acting, Matt Murdock (the characters real life persona) should have been Daredevil.
- Affleck in real life is already viewed as a kind Bruce Wayne millionaire playboy. It will be a tough thing for viewers to see past a millionaire playboy playing the part of a millionaire playboy who is also a crime fighter. Acting is usually about playing the part and not taking the role because they are already viewed as the part. Christian Bale was kind of known for being able to do this is his roles. Most people can name the characters Bale played in previous films yet, it is pretty tough to remember the name of Affleck’s characters in most of his previous films (again, Matt Murdock in Daredevil).
What I am basically saying is that while we can’t really know how this will go, there are plenty examples of why Affleck won’t pull Batman off. There aren’t a lot of examples as to why he will. It is clearly an uphill battle he is fighting. To ‘hope’ that he will do well is one thing. To ‘believe’ he will do well just doesn’t have a lot to support it.
